Maximizing Safety in Real Estate Transactions: Effective Radon Management

In his enlightening presentation at the March 1999 Conference for Radon Professionals, hosted by the Illinois Association of Realtors, University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) - Division of Nuclear Safety, Mr. Holmen shared crucial advice on managing radon in real estate:

1. Trust Licensed Experts: Always rely on professionals licensed by the IEMA for radon measurements and mitigation.
2. Know Your Limits: Avoid presenting yourself as a radon expert unless you are certified.
3. Avoid Misinformation: Do not dismiss radon concerns by claiming it's not an issue in your area.
4. Educate and Inform: Equip yourself with radon knowledge and share it with clients.
5. Establish Clear Policies: Develop and adhere to office guidelines about informing clients on radon risks.
6. Legal Compliance: Understand that tampering with radon measurements and mitigation is illegal in Illinois.
7. Respect Expertise: Do not suggest test or mitigation strategies that contradict licensed professionals.
8. Ethical Practice: Avoid fraud by disclosing radon levels to potential buyers.
